That aerial warcraft would eventually be entirely unmanned has been accepted for some time, I think. Perhaps the protesting was in the waging of war from domestic territory. (That may be a particularly US sentiment as the it's been almost a century and a half since a land battle was fought in the continental US.) I don't think it increases the danger to the citizens since the Bad Guys have already demonstrated a willingness to attack non-military targets.
